Front of house from formal garden, Tregothnan, St Michael Penkivel, Cornwall. Around 1925
Tregothnan has been home to the Boscawen family since 1334. The house was rebuilt by Edward Boscawen (1787-1841), fourth Viscount and First Earl of Falmouth, near the site of an older mansion. Tregothnan has the largest historic garden in Cornwall. It is open to the public for one weekend every year. Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in some cases, painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning front of house at Tregothnan, located in St Michael Penkivel, Cornwall. Taken around 1925, this image transports us back to a time when the Boscawen family had called this place home for over five centuries. The house itself was reconstructed by Edward Boscawen, the fourth Viscount and First Earl of Falmouth, near the original mansion's location. With its rich history and architectural beauty, Tregothnan stands as a testament to the family's enduring legacy. What truly sets Tregothnan apart is its expansive historic garden - the largest in all of Cornwall. This hidden gem has captivated visitors for generations with its enchanting landscapes and vibrant flora. While it remains open to the public only once a year during a special weekend event, lucky attendees are treated to an unforgettable experience. The photographer behind this remarkable image is Major Arthur William Gill, a Cornishman known throughout Cornwall and beyond during the 1920s and 1930s. His talent for capturing stills on quarter plate slides using his ordinary camera was unparalleled. In some cases, he even added his own artistic touch through hand-painting techniques that enhanced their visual impact. This print not only captures an exquisite moment in time but also serves as a tribute to both Tregothnan's grandeur and Major Arthur William Gill's skillful artistry behind the lens.
