EDITORS COMMENTS
Alfonso X, also known as Alfonso the Wise, was the King of Castile and León from 1252 until his death in 1284. This stunning Gothic miniature painting, created in Spain around 1463, showcases Alfonso and his royal family. The king is depicted in regal attire, wearing a crown and holding a scepter, while his wife, Violante of Aragon and Hungary, stands on his right. Violante is dressed in the traditional robes of the Aragonese and Hungarian courts. Surrounding the royal couple are their children: Fernando de la Cerda, Sancho IV the Brave, and infants John, James, Peter, Berengaria, and Eleanor. Fernando, the eldest son, was the heir to the throne before his untimely death in 1275. Sancho IV, born in 1258, succeeded Alfonso as king after his father's death. The other children, born between 1260 and 1267, did not survive into adulthood. This painting is an essential piece of Spanish art history, showcasing the genealogy of the Spanish monarchy during the late Middle Ages. The intricate details and rich colors of the miniature painting highlight the artistic skills of the Gothic era, making it a valuable addition to any collection or display.
