Hertford Square Coventry OP00980
Hertford Square, Coventry, West Midlands, 1953. John M Prest (1908-'86), silver gelatin DOP (developing out paper) print. A van and lines of washing form a significant part of John Prests view of weavers housing in Hertford Square, Coventry in 1953. Prest was employed as a graduate apprentice in Coventry from 1952 to 1953 and his academic interest in domestic textile industries encouraged him to spend several years traveling the country to find and record weavers and other artisan houses. His photographs, mainly taken from streets and back alleys, show exactly what anyone could see for themselves if they cared to look, including traffic, pedestrians and other obstructions. The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England acquired his collection in 1995

EDITORS COMMENTS
This silver gelatin DOP (Developing Out Paper) print by John M. Prest captures a moment in time at Hertford Square, Coventry, in 1953. The image showcases a van parked in front of a row of weavers' housing, with lines of washing hanging out to dry. Prest, who was employed as a graduate apprentice in Coventry from 1952 to 1953, had an academic interest in domestic textile industries. During his spare time, he traveled throughout the country to document weavers and other artisan houses. Prest's photographs, including this one, offer a unique glimpse into the past, revealing the everyday scenes that were often overlooked. The image captures the hustle and bustle of the street, with traffic and pedestrians in the background, adding to the authenticity of the scene. The van and washing lines provide a sense of the daily routine of the weavers and their families. The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England acquired Prest's collection in 1995, and it is now part of the Picturing England archive held by Historic England. This photograph, along with the others in the collection, provides valuable insights into urban residential life in the mid-20th century, offering a window into a time when industrial textile production was a significant part of Coventry's heritage.
