Von Guerickes demonstration of the strength of air pressure, 1672
Von Guerickes demonstration of the strength of air pressure, 1672. In the mid 17th century Otto von Guericke used an air-pump to remove the air from between two large close-fitting copper hemispheres, known as Magdeburg hemispheres. The effect of the air pressure on the two hemispheres was such that two teams of 8 horses could not separate them. Once the air was let back into the enclosure, however, the hemispheres were parted easily. From Experimenta Nova by Otto von Guericke. (Amsterdam, 1672)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in scientific history - Otto von Guericke's groundbreaking demonstration of the strength of air pressure in 1672. In this mid-17th century experiment, Von Guericke utilized an air-pump to extract the air from between two large copper hemispheres known as Magdeburg hemispheres. The astonishing power of air pressure is vividly illustrated as two teams of eight horses strain with all their might but fail to separate the tightly fitting hemispheres. This awe-inspiring display showcases the immense force that can be exerted by something as intangible as air. Von Guericke's innovative experiment not only revealed the remarkable properties of air pressure but also laid the foundation for further advancements in physics and science. His pneumatic apparatus revolutionized our understanding of vacuum and paved the way for future discoveries. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this engraving, transporting us back to a bygone era where scientific exploration was at its zenith. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of Germany's rich scientific heritage and its contributions to human knowledge. This print serves as a testament to Von Guericke's ingenuity and his tireless pursuit of knowledge. It stands as a reminder that even seemingly invisible forces can have profound effects on our world, challenging us to continually push boundaries and unravel nature's mysteries.
