EDITORS COMMENTS
This postcard showcases the charming and affable presence of Willie Edouin as the millionaire character, Im Hoggenheimer, from the long-running theatrical production, "The Girl from Kays." First staged at the Apollo Theatre in London on November 15, 1902, "The Girl from Kays" played for an impressive 432 performances and went on to enjoy successful runs in New York, Australia, and other provinces. Edouin's portrayal of Im Hoggenheimer was a departure from the typical caricatured depictions of American millionaires in productions of the period. Instead, the audience was invited to laugh with him rather than at him, as he navigated the misunderstandings and mishaps that arose when his wife mistakenly believed him to be unfaithful. In this image, Edouin is shown in character, dressed in the height of fashion with a top hat, monocle, and a well-groomed moustache. The silhouette of a woman, likely his wife, can be seen in the background, holding a new hat and bonnet from Kays Hat Shop. Edouin appears hunched and bent, seemingly deep in thought or perhaps amused by the situation at hand. The contrast between his elegant attire and his hunched posture adds to the comedic effect of the image. This postcard is a fascinating glimpse into the world of early 20th-century theatre and the enduring appeal of Willie Edouin's comedic talent. Dated 1904, it is a testament to the enduring impact of "The Girl from Kays" and the lasting legacy of its beloved cast members.
