Netsuke carved in the form of a rat, one of the 12 animals of the Japanese zodiac
Netsuke carved in the form of a rat, one of the 12 animals of the Japanese zodiac. A netsuke is a fastening for attaching a pouch for carrying personal items (inro) to the sash of a kimono. The inro and netsuke evolved as a solution to the problem of the traditional kimono having no pockets in which to carry items. Initially functional in design, they evolved into intricately carved decorative forms. Materials used included bone, ivory, and various types of wood. Although kimonos have been superseded by western dress in modern Japan, the art of netsuke carving lives on. From the Victoria and Albert Museum, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a beautifully carved netsuke in the form of a rat, representing one of the 12 animals of the Japanese zodiac. Netsuke, traditionally used as fastenings for attaching pouches (inro) to kimonos, have evolved into exquisite decorative objects over time. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this particular netsuke exemplifies the artistry and craftsmanship that still thrives today. Made from materials such as bone, ivory, and various types of wood, these miniature sculptures were ingeniously designed to solve the problem of kimono's lack of pockets. While kimonos may no longer be commonly worn in modern Japan due to Western influence on fashion trends, the art of netsuke carving continues to flourish. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London proudly houses this remarkable piece among its extensive collection. Its delicate features and intricate carvings serve as a testament to both Japanese culture and artistic expression. As we admire this extraordinary creation, we are reminded not only of Japan's rich heritage but also its deep connection with astrology and symbolism. Through this photograph print by an unknown creator from Heritage Images, viewers are transported into a world where tradition meets innovation—a world where functional objects transform into awe-inspiring works of art.
