Astronomical map, centred on the Southern constellation of Argo Navis, 1742. From Atlas Coelestis by John Gabriel Doppelmayer. (Nuremberg, 1742). Argo Navis (or Argus) is an old name for a combination of the four consellations of Carina (the Keel), Vela (the Sail), Puppis (the Stern), and Pyxis (the Compass). It represents the ship in which Jason and the Argonauts sailed to find the Golden Fleece in Greek legend. It contains Canopus, the second brightest star in the night sky, as well as Eta Carinae, one of the most massive stars yet discovered, which is highly unstable and prone to massive outbursts of energy

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an astronomical map from 1742, centered on the Southern constellation of Argo Navis. Created by Johann Gabriel Doppelmayer, this intricate engraving is part of the renowned Atlas Coelestis collection. Argo Navis, also known as Argus, combines four constellations: Carina (the Keel), Vela (the Sail), Puppis (the Stern), and Pyxis (the Compass). In Greek mythology, it represents the ship in which Jason and the Argonauts embarked on their quest for the Golden Fleece. The map not only reveals celestial wonders but also highlights significant stars within Argo Navis. Canopus, one of the brightest stars in our night sky, shines brightly within this constellation. Additionally, Eta Carinae stands out as one of the largest and most unstable stars ever discovered. With its detailed depiction of a legendary ship sailing through cosmic realms, this print transports us to ancient Greece while simultaneously showcasing German craftsmanship from the 18th century. The monochrome aesthetic adds a touch of elegance to this scientific masterpiece. Whether you are an astronomy enthusiast or simply appreciate artistry intertwined with mythology and science, this extraordinary print will undoubtedly captivate your imagination. Its historical significance makes it a valuable addition to any collection that celebrates both human curiosity about our universe's mysteries and artistic expression throughout time.
