Widely regarded as one of the most celebrated rulers among the Indian States under British rule, Maharajah Krishna Raja Wadiyar, also known as Nalwadi Krishna Raja Wadiyar, ruled Mysore from 1902 until his death in 1940. At the time of his demise, he was among the wealthiest men in the world, with a personal fortune estimated to be worth approximately $400 million in 1940, equivalent to $56 billion in 2010 prices. This photograph, published in The Sketch, captures the Maharajah in the midst of his generous contribution to the war effort. In 1914, he donated an impressive fifty lakhs of rupees (approximately 330,000 rupees or £150,000 at the time) to the Indian Government for expenditure in connection with the Indian Expeditionary Force.
