Adenovirus particles and bacterium, TEM
Adenovirus particles and bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of adenovirus particles (green) with a gut bacterium (orange). Each particle consists of an icosahedral protein coat (capsid) surrounding double stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the virus genetic material. The capsid has a glycoprotein fibre projecting from each of its apexes that aids attachment of the virus to its host cell. Adenoviruses most commonly cause respiratory disease in humans, but can also cause diseases of the genitourinary system and, in this case, gastroenteritis. These viruses have also proved successful for use as vectors in gene therapy and DNA vaccination. Magnification: x48, 000 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of microscopic organisms. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM), we witness the fascinating interaction between adenovirus particles and a gut bacterium. The green adenovirus particles are enveloped by an icosahedral protein coat, protecting their double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) genetic material. Each apex of the capsid extends a glycoprotein fibre that aids in attaching to host cells. Adenoviruses primarily cause respiratory diseases in humans, but they can also affect the genitourinary system and, as depicted here, lead to gastroenteritis. However, these viruses have proven to be valuable tools in gene therapy and DNA vaccination research due to their successful use as vectors. With a magnification of x48,000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide, this image offers us a glimpse into the hidden realm of biology and medicine. It highlights the complex interplay between pathogens like bacteria and viruses with our own bodies. The false colouring adds vibrancy to this otherwise unseen world, allowing us to appreciate its beauty while deepening our understanding of microbiology. This stunning photograph is just one example of Science Photo Library's vast collection that continues to inspire scientists and enthusiasts alike with its remarkable visuals from various scientific disciplines.
