Yankee Doodle, 1872. Artist: Joseph Swain

Yankee Doodle, 1872. America rides into Geneva on a spotted circus horse with Mr Punch heckling in the background. This cartoon relates to a matter that had been going on since the end of the American Civil War. The Alabama Claims had been prompted by the damage done to American commerce by the Alabama, a privateer fitted out in England. The main issue was whether England should have accepted responsibility for preventing the ship from leaving England. The amount of the claim for indirect damages continued to grow. The persons appointed to arbitrate on the claim were now meeting in Geneva. A pony can also refer to the old slang term for the sum of £ 25.00. From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 23, 1872

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Yankee Doodle, 1872" by Joseph Swain captures a significant moment in American history. In this satirical cartoon, America rides into Geneva on a spotted circus horse while Mr Punch heckles in the background. The image symbolizes the ongoing dispute known as the Alabama Claims, which arose after the American Civil War. The Alabama Claims were prompted by the damage caused to American commerce by a privateer named Alabama that was fitted out in England. The central issue revolved around whether England should have taken responsibility for preventing the ship from leaving its shores. As time passed, the claim for indirect damages continued to grow. In this context, Geneva became an important location as it hosted arbitrators appointed to settle these claims. Interestingly, within this artwork, there is also a play on words with "pony" which refers to an old slang term for £25.00. Joseph Swain's engraving skillfully combines caricature and satire to depict this complex political matter of foreign affairs during the 19th century. With its detailed portrayal of horses and ships alongside iconic figures like Mr Punch, this print offers us a glimpse into both historical events and artistic techniques of that era.
