Empress Catherine II before the Mirror, 1779. Artist: Vigilius Erichsen
Empress Catherine II before the Mirror, 1779. Catherine the Great (1729-1796) came to the throne in 1762. A German princess, she was chosen at the age of 14 to be the wife of Peter III of Russia. The marriage was a failure and Catherine conspired with a group of nobles including her lover, Count Orlov, to depose the Tsar, with Catherine ruling in his stead. Her reign saw Russia take an increasing role in European affairs and expand its empire with the addition of the Crimea and much of Poland. Found in the collection of the State Russian Museum, St Petersburg

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Empress Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, in a moment of introspection before her mirror. Painted by Vigilius Erichsen in 1779, this artwork showcases the powerful ruler who ascended to the Russian throne in 1762. Catherine's journey began when she was chosen at just 14 years old to marry Peter III of Russia. However, their union proved to be an unhappy one, leading Catherine to conspire with nobles and her lover Count Orlov to overthrow Peter III and take control herself. Thus began her remarkable reign that saw Russia emerge as a major player on the European stage. In this portrait, we witness Catherine's regal presence and strong sense of self. The reflection in the mirror symbolizes not only her physical beauty but also her deep contemplation about the weighty responsibilities that come with ruling a vast empire. Dressed resplendently in royal attire, Catherine exudes confidence and authority. Her vibrant costume reflects both her status as a monarch and her keen eye for fashion. As she gazes into the mirror, we can almost imagine the thoughts running through her mind - strategies for expanding Russia's territories or perhaps contemplating how history will remember her reign. Displayed at the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg, this painting is not merely an artistic masterpiece but also serves as a testament to Catherine II's enduring legacy as one of history's most influential female leaders.
