Grimsby Dock Tower EAW029404
GRIMSBY DOCK TOWER, Lincolnshire. This famous maritime landmark was built in 1852 as a hydraulic reservoir to power the lock gates and cranes of Grimsby Docks. Based on the design of the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, the tower is 94m tall. By 1900 new technology made it largely redundant, but it remains a monument to Grimsbys maritime heritage. There is a model of the tower at Legoland, Windsor. The paddle steamer Lincoln Castle can also be seen in the graving dock at the entrance of the Royal Dock in this 1950 photograph. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this aerial photograph from the 1950s, the Grimsby Dock Tower, a historic maritime landmark in Lincolnshire, England, takes center stage. Constructed in 1852, this architectural marvel was designed to serve as a hydraulic reservoir, powering the lock gates and cranes of Grimsby Docks. Inspired by the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, Italy, the tower stands tall at 94 meters, making it a prominent feature of the Grimsby skyline. By the turn of the 20th century, new technological advancements rendered the tower largely obsolete. Yet, it continues to stand as a testament to Grimsby's rich maritime heritage. The intricate design of the tower, with its distinctive red-brick exterior and elegant spiral staircase, has captured the imagination of generations. In this photograph, the Grimsby Dock Tower can be seen in all its glory, towering over the graving dock at the entrance of the Royal Dock. The paddle steamer Lincoln Castle, a relic of a bygone era, rests peacefully in the dock, adding to the nostalgic charm of the scene. The image offers a unique perspective, allowing us to appreciate the tower's grandeur and the bustling activity of the dockyard below. The legacy of the Grimsby Dock Tower extends beyond its physical presence, as a model of the structure can be found at Legoland, Windsor. This iconic landmark continues to inspire awe and fascination, reminding us of Grimsby's storied past as a thriving maritime community.
