A Heroic Deed of the Royal Horse Artillery Near Compiegne, (1919)
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This powerful print captures a defining moment in history during the First World War. The scene depicts the Battle of Nery in September 1914, where the British 1st Cavalry Brigade and L Battery, Royal Horse Artillery valiantly defended against German forces until relieved by British infantry reinforcements. In this image, we witness an awe-inspiring act of bravery as Captain Edward Bradbury, Sergeant David Nelson, and Battery Sergeant-Major George Dorrell heroically hold their ground. Despite facing overwhelming odds and witnessing their battery being decimated by enemy fire, they refuse to surrender. With unwavering determination and courage, they keep one gun operational amidst chaos and destruction. Their extraordinary efforts did not go unnoticed; all three men were awarded the Victoria Cross for their exceptional valor. Tragically, Captain Bradbury's VC was posthumous - a poignant reminder of his ultimate sacrifice for his comrades. The black-and-white composition adds depth to this historic moment captured by an unknown creator. It serves as a testament to the resilience and indomitable spirit displayed by these brave soldiers on that fateful day. Preserved within "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects" this photograph stands as a tribute to those who fought selflessly during one of humanity's darkest chapters. It immortalizes not only their heroic actions but also symbolizes the collective strength exhibited by countless individuals throughout this tumultuous period in our shared history.
