XMM-Newton telescope deployment
XMM-Newton deployment. Artwork showing the deployment of the XMM-Newton X-ray telescope from its Ariane 5 launch vehicle. This large satellite was deployed on 10th December`1999. This satellite (grey) is being released from the upper stage of the Ariane rocket. The XMM (X-ray Multi-Mirror)- Newton X-ray telescope was launched into a highly elliptical orbit and is used to study black holes, supernovae and other high energy phenomena. It has three X-ray telescopes as well as a small optical telescope. The X- ray telescopes each have a set of 58 concentric mirrors which deflect X- rays onto detectors at the rear of the instrument (far right)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the awe-inspiring moment of the XMM-Newton telescope deployment. On December 10th, 1999, this monumental satellite embarked on its journey into space from the Ariane 5 launch vehicle. The grey satellite gracefully separates from the upper stage of the rocket, symbolizing a new chapter in astronomical exploration. The XMM-Newton X-ray telescope was designed to unravel some of the universe's greatest mysteries. With its placement in a highly elliptical orbit, it became an invaluable tool for studying black holes, supernovae, and other high-energy phenomena. Comprising three X-ray telescopes and a small optical telescope, this cutting-edge instrument revolutionized astrophysics. At its core are 58 concentric mirrors that skillfully deflect X-rays onto detectors positioned at the rear of the instrument. This intricate design allows scientists to capture elusive cosmic events with unprecedented precision and clarity. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing image, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our earthly boundaries. It serves as a testament to our insatiable curiosity about what lies beyond our reach. Science Photo Library beautifully encapsulates this pivotal moment in scientific history through their remarkable artistry. Through their lens, we witness not only a satellite launcher but also an emblematic representation of human ingenuity propelling us towards greater understanding of our vast universe.
