Lilac leaf bud, light micrograph
Lilac leaf bud. Light micrograph of a cross-section of a bud from a lilac tree (Syringa vulgaris). The bud is comprised of an outer layer of six thick scale leaves (blue and purple), which have hairs to insulate the four inner small foliage leaves with lamina (dark purple), two inner triangular leaf stalks (petioles) and then a stem (pink) containing a ring of vascular bundles (dark pink). When the sap rises during the spring, the scale leaves fall off, the inner foliage leaves take up water and expand, and the central components grow outwards to form a new shoot. Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate beauty of a lilac leaf bud in exquisite detail. The light micrograph reveals a cross-section of the bud from a Syringa vulgaris tree, showcasing its complex internal structure. The outer layer of the bud consists of six thick scale leaves, adorned in shades of blue and purple. These protective scales are covered in tiny hairs that provide insulation for the inner foliage leaves. The small foliage leaves with dark purple lamina are nestled within, surrounded by two triangular leaf stalks known as petioles. At the heart of this delicate bud lies a pink stem containing a ring of vascular bundles, depicted in dark pink hues. These bundles play a crucial role in transporting sap throughout the plant during springtime when growth is at its peak. As nature awakens and sap rises, the scale leaves gracefully fall off while the inner foliage leaves absorb water and expand. Simultaneously, the central components grow outward to form new shoots, marking another cycle of life for this resilient lilac tree. With magnification at x14 when printed 10 centimeters wide, this image offers an up-close look into the fascinating world of botany and plant anatomy. It serves as a reminder that even within seemingly simple structures like buds lie intricate cellular processes that contribute to their growth and development.
