Artwork showing acne and rupture of follicle
Acne vulgaris. Artwork showing aspects of acne vulgaris, a skin disorder in which the sebaceous glands in hair follicles become inflamed. Acne vulgaris generally starts in adolescence and is caused by overactivity of the sebaceous glands. The sebum produced by the glands cannot escape as the hair follicles are blocked by a keratin plug. Bacteria (green rods, central panels) multiply and the follicle becomes inflamed. A pustule forms in the sebaceous gland which may rupture releasing fluid (yellow) into the surrounding tissue. Acne vulgaris is found mainly on the face, back and chest. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs and ultraviolet light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork beautifully captures the intricate details of acne vulgaris, a common skin disorder that affects many adolescents. The image showcases the various aspects of this condition, providing a comprehensive visual representation. At first glance, we are drawn to the vibrant depiction of inflamed hair follicles caused by overactive sebaceous glands. These glands produce sebum which becomes trapped within blocked follicles due to keratin plugs. As our eyes wander across the artwork, we notice the green rods symbolizing bacteria multiplying within these inflamed follicles. The focal point of this piece is a pustule forming in one such gland, representing an advanced stage of acne vulgaris. This pustule may eventually rupture, releasing yellow fluid into the surrounding tissue and exacerbating inflammation. Acne vulgaris predominantly manifests on areas like the face, back, and chest – as illustrated here – causing distress for those affected. However, medical science offers hope through antibiotic drugs and ultraviolet light therapy as effective treatments for this condition. Science Photo Library has masterfully combined artistry with scientific accuracy in this print. It serves as a powerful educational tool for healthcare professionals and individuals seeking knowledge about acne vulgaris. By shedding light on its complexities through stunning visuals like these, we can better understand and address this prevalent skin disorder.
