Luge - 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics - Mens Doubles
Italys Paul Hildgartner and Walter Plaikner, the joint gold medal winners, at the Mount Teine Luge Course, Japan.
The competition provided the organisers with two problems. First, the starting gate malfunctioned, and the results of the first run were annulled. Then, after two runs, Hildgartner/Plaikner and Hornlein/Bredow were tied for first place. No provisions were made for such a case, and gold medals were awarded to both teams. At the next games artificial track luge would be timed in thousandths of a second rather than hundredths of a second in an effort to avoid a repeat situation.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the thrilling moment of victory at the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics Luge competition. The image showcases Italy's Paul Hildgartner and Walter Plaikner, who achieved an extraordinary joint gold medal win at the Mount Teine Luge Course in Japan. However, this particular event was not without its fair share of challenges for the organizers. Firstly, a malfunctioning starting gate led to the annulment of the results from the first run. Despite this setback, both teams displayed exceptional skill and determination throughout their runs. After two intense rounds, it became apparent that Hildgartner/Plaikner and Hornlein/Bredow were tied for first place. This posed a unique predicament as no provisions had been made to address such a scenario. In an unprecedented decision, gold medals were awarded to both teams in recognition of their outstanding performances. The outcome of this event prompted significant changes for future competitions. At subsequent games, artificial track luge would be timed with greater precision in thousandths rather than hundredths of a second to avoid any potential ties or uncertainties. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to these athletes' unwavering dedication and resilience amidst unforeseen circumstances. It immortalizes their shared triumph and highlights how even unexpected situations can shape sporting history forever.
