Napoleons return to Paris from the Island of Elba, 1815, (c1835). Artist: Francois Georgin
Napoleons return to Paris from the Island of Elba, 1815, (c1835). Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was exiled by the Allied governments to Elba following his abdication at Fontainebleau and landed on the island on 4 May 1814. He was allowed a personal escort of some 1, 000 men, a household staff and was even given the title Emperor of Elba and rule over its 110, 000 people. Bonaparte began his exile with a reform of the governmental system on the island, which is Italys third biggest and lies just off the coast of Tuscany. Soon, however, the former French emperors thoughts turned towards Paris - now under the restored rule of the Bourbons - and he began to plan his return. Only nine months later, on 26 February 1815, he escaped with his miniature army and landed in France. Welcomed back, he tells a woman selling vegetables to worry about her job and leaves the cares of politics to him. The 100 Days Campaign had begun

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Napoleon's Return to Paris from the Island of Elba, 1815" by artist Francois Georgin takes us back to a significant moment in history. In this scene, we witness Napoleon Bonaparte making his triumphant comeback after being exiled to the island of Elba. Having been forced into abdication and sent away by the Allied governments, Napoleon arrived on Elba in May 1814. Despite his confinement, he wasted no time implementing reforms and ruling over its inhabitants as Emperor of Elba. However, it wasn't long before thoughts of reclaiming power consumed him. Just nine months later, on February 26th, 1815, Napoleon escaped with a small army and set foot once again on French soil. The people welcomed him back with open arms as he confidently assured a woman selling vegetables not to worry about her job; he would take care of politics for them. This marked the beginning of what is known as the "100 Days Campaign" during which Napoleon attempted to regain control over France. The image captured here showcases both the determination in his eyes and the hope that surged through those who believed in his leadership. Francois Georgin's artwork immortalizes this pivotal moment in history when an iconic figure returned from exile to shape destiny once more. It serves as a reminder that even against all odds, one man's indomitable spirit can ignite change and captivate nations.
