HMS Warspite EAW005978
HMS WARSPITE, Prussia Cove, Cornwall. Warspite was launched in 1913 and saw action with the Royal Navy at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. During the second world war she saw service off Norway, Italy, in the Indian Ocean, Sicily and Normandy. Plagued by steering problems almost from the outset this Queen Elizabeth class battleship was finally sold for scrap in 1947. Photographed here in May 1947, she is seen here having run her anchor during a storm and run aground while on her way to be broken up. Aerofilms Collection (see Links)

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative aerial photograph, the historic battleship HMS Warspite lies stranded on the rocky shore of Prussia Cove in Cornwall, England. Launched in 1913, HMS Warspite was a proud addition to the Royal Navy's Queen Elizabeth class battleships. Her service record spans two world wars, with notable engagements at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and various campaigns off Norway, Italy, the Indian Ocean, Sicily, and Normandy. Despite her distinguished military history, the battleship was plagued by persistent steering problems, which hindered her effectiveness in battle and ultimately contributed to her retirement from service. In May 1947, as she was being towed to be broken up for scrap, a violent storm struck, causing the Warspite to run her anchor and ground herself on the Cornish coast. The photograph, taken by Aerofilms, captures the battleship's final moments as she sits helplessly on the shore, her once-mighty form dwarfed by the vast expanse of the sea and sky. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the Warspite's storied past and the inexorable passage of time. This photograph is an essential addition to any maritime or military collection, showcasing the grandeur and history of one of the Royal Navy's most iconic vessels. The image also highlights the beauty and power of the natural world, as the battleship's fate is ultimately determined by the forces of the sea and the weather. The Aerofilms Collection, now held by Historic England, offers a unique perspective on the history of the United Kingdom, with a wealth of aerial photographs documenting the country's social, industrial, and military development. This photograph of HMS Warspite is a testament to the importance of preserving these images for future generations.
