EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of St Margarets Church in York. The image showcases the church's south elevation, nestled between a charming vestry and porch. As you gaze upon this architectural marvel, you can't help but be transported back in time. St Margarets Church has a rich history, standing on the grounds of an earlier church. Its late 12th-century south porch seamlessly blends with the 14th-century nave, which features a striking north aisle. A magnificent three-stage buttress divides the second and third bays of the south elevation, adding to its grandeur. Although no longer serving as an active parish church since 1974, St Margarets has found new purpose over the years. It served as a warehouse for the esteemed Theatre Royal before being transformed into the National Centre for Early Music. This transformation speaks volumes about its versatility and adaptability throughout different eras. Surrounded by lush trees that add to its serenity, St Margarets stands as a testament to religious devotion through centuries past. Its presence evokes feelings of reverence and awe while reminding us of our shared heritage. George Bernard Wood skillfully captured this moment in time through his lens, allowing us to appreciate both the architectural brilliance and historical significance of St Margarets Church in all its glory.
