EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the chaotic aftermath of the Bloody Easter in Dublin. The image takes us further down O'Connell Street, away from the besieged post office where intense gunfire exchanges ignited a series of blazing buildings. In the distance stands Liberty Hall, serving as rebel headquarters and also under siege during this tumultuous time. At the far end of O'Connell Street, we catch a glimpse of the tranquil River Liffey, which ironically served as a route for British forces to sail a gunboat and bombard the rebels. Adding an intriguing historical twist to this snapshot is Nelson's Pillar, once an iconic landmark on O'Connell Street but demolished fifty years later. It was from this very pillar that our photographer captured this poignant scene in 1916. The photograph serves as a powerful reminder of Ireland's rebellion against British rule during Easter Rising. The rebels fought valiantly for their independence and their actions forever shaped Irish history. Preserved within TopFoto's extensive archive collection, this vintage print offers us a window into one of Dublin's most significant moments.
