Air raid damage to the gas holder at Swindon Works, 1942

Swindon Works following the air raid on 27th July 1942. The gas holder at the gas works is pock-marked by machine gun fire from a lone aircraft that had swooped over the town early in the morning. A fire broke out in the gas holder, but it was quickly put out and the holes were plugged with clay to prevent any further damage. It is interesting to note the strange breathing apparatus worn by the two men in the left of the image; presumably masks to combat the effects of any escaping gas

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR takes us back to a defining moment in history - the air raid on Swindon Works in 1942. The image showcases the aftermath of this devastating attack, with all eyes drawn to the gas holder at the gas works. Its once pristine surface now bears witness to the destructive power of machine gun fire unleashed by a lone aircraft that had ominously soared over the town that fateful morning. Despite igniting a fire within its structure, swift action prevented further catastrophe as it was promptly extinguished and clay was used to seal up each pockmark left behind by enemy bullets. However, what truly captures our attention are two figures standing on the left side of this haunting scene. Cloaked in peculiar breathing apparatuses, these brave men donned masks designed to shield them from any potential escaping gas. As we contemplate this photograph, we are reminded not only of war's unforgiving nature but also of humanity's resilience and determination during such trying times. It serves as a poignant reminder that even amidst chaos and destruction, ordinary individuals rise above adversity to protect their communities and restore hope for a better tomorrow. Let this snapshot transport us back in time, allowing us to reflect upon those who lived through World War II and pay tribute to their unwavering spirit in face of unimaginable challenges.
