Olenellus gilberti trilobite fossil
Olenellus gilberti trilobite fossil. Trilobites were arthropods that fed as they crawled on the seabed. They are now extinct. This trilobite species was described in 1874 by the US geologist and palaeontologist Fielding Bradford Meek (1817-1876). The fossil dates from the Lower Cambrian period (510 to 540 million years ago), and was found in the Chisolm shale section of the Pioche formation, in Nevada, USA. This specimen is part of a collection maintained by Pete Lawrence

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Olenellus gilberti trilobite fossil, a relic from a bygone era. Trilobites, ancient arthropods that once roamed the seabed, have long been extinct but continue to fascinate scientists and nature enthusiasts alike. This particular species was meticulously described in 1874 by Fielding Bradford Meek, an esteemed American geologist and paleontologist. Dating back to the Lower Cambrian period around 510 to 540 million years ago, this well-preserved fossil was discovered in the Chisolm shale section of the Pioche formation in Nevada, USA. It now proudly resides within Pete Lawrence's extensive collection of natural wonders. The photograph not only captures the intricate details of this single trilobite specimen but also serves as a window into prehistoric times. Its historical significance lies not only in its biological importance but also in its contribution to our understanding of Earth's deep past. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of the incredible diversity that once thrived on our planet and how much has changed over millions of years. The study of paleontology allows us to unravel mysteries about life forms that no longer exist and provides invaluable insights into our own evolutionary journey. Science Photo Library presents this awe-inspiring snapshot as part of their vast collection dedicated to showcasing nature's wonders through scientific lenses.
