Nanowire solar cell
Nanowire solar cell. This solar cell is coated with billions of tiny nanowires, each measuring 60 nanometres (billionths of a metre) in diameter and 20 micrometres (thousandths of a metre) in length. These artificially grown crystal filaments can convert light energy into electricity. They were created by coating a glass surface with zinc oxide dots that grew into nanowires when bathed in zinc oxide solution. The nanowires were then dipped in light absorbing dye and connected to electrodes. Nanowire solar cells are cheaper to build than silicon-based cells, however they have yet to match the same energy conversion efficiency. This device was built by chemist Peidong Yang and his team at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. Photographed in 2008

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a groundbreaking innovation in the field of solar energy - the Nanowire Solar Cell. The image captures the intricate beauty of this cutting-edge technology, revealing billions of minuscule nanowires that coat the surface of a solar cell. Each nanowire measures an astonishing 60 nanometres in diameter and stretches to 20 micrometres in length. These artificially grown crystal filaments possess an extraordinary ability to convert light energy into electricity, revolutionizing renewable energy sources. The process behind their creation involved coating a glass surface with zinc oxide dots, which then grew into these remarkable nanowires when immersed in a zinc oxide solution. To enhance their light absorption capabilities, they were further dipped in a dye before being connected to electrodes. Developed by chemist Peidong Yang and his team at the University of California, Berkeley back in 2008, this breakthrough invention offers immense potential for affordable solar power generation. While Nanowire Solar Cells are cheaper to construct compared to traditional silicon-based cells, they have yet to match their efficiency levels. The photograph serves as both a testament to human ingenuity and a glimpse into our sustainable future. It highlights the incredible strides made within the fields of engineering, chemistry, materials science, and nanotechnology while reminding us that there is still much work ahead on our quest for clean and efficient energy solutions.
