Weights Cigarettes, 1928
Players Weights pull-forward counter card. There should be three sections but the read part is missing. The surviving centre section is a picture of a fox-hunting scene with a woman riding side-saddle and a man in a red hunting jacket jumping a hurdle. There are three other riders in the field and in the distance is a pack of hounds. The caption reads " LEADING THE FIELD". The front section shows three packs of Weights cigarettes and the text " 5 for 2D 20 for 8D 10 for 4D // JOHN PLAYER & SONS, NOTTINGHAM". Stapled to the bottom left hand corner is a white label which reads " 6778". On the reverse is the remains of the connecting cards

This vintage print captures a piece of history from 1928, showcasing an advertisement for Weights Cigarettes by John Player & Sons. The pull-forward counter card is divided into three sections, with the central surviving portion stealing the spotlight. It depicts an exhilarating fox-hunting scene, where a woman gracefully rides side-saddle while a man in a vibrant red hunting jacket leaps over a hurdle. In the background, we catch sight of three other riders and a pack of hounds eagerly pursuing their prey. The caption accompanying this image simply reads "LEADING THE FIELD" perfectly encapsulating the spirit and excitement of this traditional British sport. On the front section of the card, we find three packs of Weights cigarettes proudly displayed alongside enticing pricing details: "5 for 2D, 20 for 8D, 10 for 4D". This nostalgic glimpse into tobacco advertising serves as a reminder of how times have changed. Affixed to the bottom left corner is a white label bearing the number "6778" adding an intriguing element to this historical artifact. Turning it over reveals remnants of connecting cards that were once part of this promotional material. As we delve into Nottingham City's rich past through these photos, it's fascinating to witness not only its architectural wonders but also glimpses into everyday life and popular culture – such as this snapshot from John Player & Sons' advertising campaign that beautifully intertwines hunting traditions with tobacco promotion.
