" Speed" is the slogan of the Signals, and the Signals are the arteries of the Army. In the field it is not always easy for the directing staff to know the position, but in recent exercises in Northern Ireland, communication was established and maintained by mobile wireless, over greater distances than ever.
An Officer is sending back a report of the situation from an advanced position, Signal NCO can be seen transmitting a message by morse code, dictated by the Officer (who is making a copy at the same time). It is possible, by morse, to get a greater range from the same set than would be possible by direct speech. The officer and men are making the most of the cover available.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history during the Second World War, where speed and communication were vital for the success of the army. The Signals, known as the arteries of the Army, played a crucial role in maintaining contact with troops on the field. In this image taken in August 1941 during exercises in Northern Ireland, we witness an Officer sending back a report from an advanced position. The scene showcases remarkable advancements in mobile wireless technology that allowed communication over greater distances than ever before. A Signal NCO can be seen diligently transmitting a message using Morse code under the direction of the Officer who is simultaneously making a copy. This method provided them with an extended range compared to direct speech. Amidst their duties, both officer and men take advantage of whatever cover they can find to protect themselves from potential danger. It is evident that these brave soldiers are making every effort to ensure effective communication while minimizing risk. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of not only the challenges faced by armed forces during wartime but also their resourcefulness and determination to overcome obstacles through innovation and teamwork. It stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment towards achieving victory on behalf of their nation.
