In the big freeze of early 1947, the railways kept the countryOs lifelines open

In the big freeze of early 1947, the railways kept the countryOs lifelines open. This sequence shows the progress of an LMS Stanier Black Five locomotive on a highly scenic Scottish journey from Perth to Aviemore and Forres, Moray Firth, on the old Highland Railway across the snow-covered north east Grampian Mountains. The southern 10 miles of this line from Aviemore to Boat of Garten and Broomhill form the preserved Strathspey Railway, but the northern section is closed. The Scottish landscape is covered in snow as the train travels from Perth northwards to the Forres in Morayshire

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the big freeze of early 1947, the railways played a vital role in keeping the country's lifelines open. This print takes us back to that time, showcasing an LMS Stanier Black Five locomotive on a breathtaking Scottish journey from Perth to Aviemore and Forres, Moray Firth. The old Highland Railway cuts through the snow-covered north east Grampian Mountains, offering a highly scenic route. As we follow this steam train's progress, we witness the stunning Scottish landscape transformed into a winter wonderland. Snow blankets every inch as far as the eye can see, creating a picturesque scene that captures both the beauty and challenges of this season. The preserved Strathspey Railway now encompasses ten miles of this historic line from Aviemore to Boat of Garten and Broomhill. However, sadly, the northern section remains closed today. This print not only transports us back in time but also reminds us of how essential railways were during harsh winters like that of 1947. They served as crucial connections between towns and cities when other modes of transportation struggled to operate efficiently. So take a moment to appreciate this remarkable image captured by Daily Mirror's Memory Lane Prints collection. It encapsulates Scotland's snowy charm while honoring the resilience and importance of our railway systems.
