EDITORS COMMENTS
This magnificent limestone stele, dating back to the 20th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, around 1100 BC, is dedicated to the revered deity Mnevis, the sacred bull of Atum Ra, the sun god. The stele originated from the ancient city of Heliopolis, a center of sun worship in Egypt. The intricately carved relief depicts a man, possibly a priest, making an offering to Mnevis. The bull's head is shown in profile, with its large, curved horns adorned with lotus flowers and the solar disk between them. The hieroglyphs inscribed on the stele describe the bull as "Mer Wer" or "Mer Mnevis," meaning "beloved of the god." The bull was considered a manifestation of the god Ra and was believed to carry the solar barque across the sky each night. The offering scene on the stele symbolizes the continuation of this divine process, ensuring the sun would rise each morning. The hieroglyphs also mention the deity Re, further emphasizing the sun god's importance in ancient Egyptian religion. The stele's intricate details, including the hieroglyphs and the lotus flowers, are a testament to the Egyptians' mastery of art and their deep reverence for their gods. This beautiful artifact is now housed in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, a museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, where it continues to inspire awe and fascination among visitors from around the world.
