EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir John Hotham Riding 2: A Portrait of a Parliamentary Soldier in the English Civil War (1642-1651) This evocative photograph print captures the likeness of Sir John Hotham, a prominent Parliamentary soldier during the English Civil War (1642-1651). The image, taken from an original portrait, presents Sir John in a moment of respite from the chaos of battle. He is depicted astride a horse, dressed in the armor and attire of a 17th-century military man. His stern expression and piercing gaze suggest a man of determination and resolve, ready to lead his troops into battle against the forces of King Charles I. Sir John Hotham was born into a wealthy family in Holderness, Yorkshire, England, and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He became a Member of Parliament for Hedon in 1625 and was appointed High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1633. When the English Civil War broke out in 1642, Hotham joined the Parliamentary forces, and his military career took off. He played a key role in the siege of Hull in 1642 and was instrumental in the Parliamentary victory at the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644. Despite his military successes, Sir John Hotham's loyalty to the Parliamentary cause was not without controversy. In 1645, he was impeached by the House of Commons for his role in the execution of the royalist leader, Lord Newcastle. However, he was later acquitted and continued to serve the Parliamentary forces until the end of the war. This photograph print offers a glimpse into the life of a pivotal figure in English history, a man who played a crucial role in shaping the outcome of the English Civil War. The image captures the essence of a soldier in the midst of a tumultuous period, a man who was both a leader and a warrior, and a symbol of the political and military upheaval that swept through England during the 17th century.
