H.M.S. Hampshire sinks in heavy seas just off the Orkneys, having most likely struck a mine laid by a German submarine before the Battle of Jutland. In the cold, turbulent waters off the Orkney Islands on June 5, 1916, the once proud and mighty H.M.S. Hampshire met its tragic end. The British naval vessel, carrying the esteemed Secretary of State for War, Lord Kitchener, and his staff, was most likely the victim of a German submarine's mine, just north of the Scottish coast. The sinking occurred in the days leading up to the Battle of Jutland, a major naval engagement between the British Royal Navy and the Imperial German Navy. The Hampshire, a former cruiser turned transport ship, was on a mission to deliver Lord Kitchener and his team to Russia, in support of the ongoing war efforts.
