Sinking of H. M. S. Hampshire

H.M.S. Hampshire sinks in heavy seas just off the Orkneys, having most likely struck a mine laid by a German submarine before the Battle of Jutland. The Hampshire was carrying Lord Kitchener, Secretary of State for War, and his staff, to Russia. They were all lost, along with all but 12 of the crew, who managed to reach shore on two Carley floats. Date: 5 June 1916

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the cold, turbulent waters off the Orkney Islands on June 5, 1916, the once proud and mighty H.M.S. Hampshire met its tragic end. The British naval vessel, carrying the esteemed Secretary of State for War, Lord Kitchener, and his staff, was most likely the victim of a German submarine's mine, just north of the Scottish coast. The sinking occurred in the days leading up to the Battle of Jutland, a major naval engagement between the British Royal Navy and the Imperial German Navy. The Hampshire, a former cruiser turned transport ship, was on a mission to deliver Lord Kitchener and his team to Russia, in support of the ongoing war efforts. However, the ship's journey was cut short as it struck the mine, causing it to sink rapidly in the heavy seas. The disaster resulted in the loss of all but 12 of the Hampshire's crew, who managed to cling to two Carley floats and eventually reach the shore. The image captures the final moments of the H.M.S. Hampshire, as it lists heavily in the water before disappearing beneath the waves. The scene is one of chaos and despair, with sailors scrambling to abandon ship and save themselves. The fate of Lord Kitchener and his staff remained a mystery for several days, until the grim truth was confirmed by the discovery of wreckage and personal belongings. This poignant photograph serves as a stark reminder of the harsh realities of war and the human cost of military conflict. The sinking of the H.M.S. Hampshire was a significant loss for the British war effort, and the loss of Lord Kitchener was felt deeply by the British people and the world at large.
