Sempill British Aviation Mission to Japan
Attack on anchored ship (artwork). William Francis Forbes-Sempill, 19th Lord Sempill AFC, AFRAeS (1893-1965) was a Scottish peer and record-breaking air pioneer who was later shown to have passed secret information to the Imperial Japanese military before the Second World War. In 1921, Sempill led an official military mission to Japan that showcased the latest British aircraft. In subsequent years he continued to aid the Imperial Japanese Navy in developing its Navy Air Service and began giving military secrets to the Japanese. Although his activities were uncovered by British Intelligence, Sempill was not prosecuted for spying and allowed to continue in public life. Date: 1920s

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the 1920s with this rare and fascinating photograph from the Royal Aeronautical Society archive. This print depicts a pivotal moment in history - the Sempill British Aviation Mission to Japan, led by William Francis Forbes-Sempill, 19th Lord Sempill AFC, AFRAeS. The mission aimed to showcase the latest British aircraft technology to Japanese officials, but what was initially intended as a diplomatic gesture would ultimately have far-reaching consequences.
As an air pioneer and record-breaker, Sempill's expertise was highly sought after by both Britain and Japan. However, his involvement with the Imperial Japanese Navy went beyond mere technical assistance. He began sharing sensitive military secrets with the Japanese, which would later aid their naval aviation development.
This striking image captures a dramatic scene of an attack on an anchored ship, showcasing Sempill's passion for flight and innovation. Yet, it also serves as a poignant reminder of the complex web of international relations during this era. Despite being exposed as a spy by British Intelligence, Sempill escaped prosecution and continued to play a significant role in public life.
This unique glass lantern slide offers a glimpse into a lesser-known chapter of history that continues to fascinate historians today.
