Pavilion Gardens, Bognor Regis: A Fascinating History of an Iconic Building (circa 1924) This photograph showcases the Pavilion Gardens in Bognor Regis, a charming seaside town located in West Sussex, England. The image transports us back in time to the early days of this iconic venue, which started its life as an innovative seaplane hangar towards the end of the First World War. When the war ended, and such structures were deemed surplus to requirements, the seaplane hangar was dismantled and reassembled on the gardens' site. The new purpose of the building was to provide entertainment for the local community and visitors. The Pavilion quickly became a massive hit, especially during the 1930s and 1940s, attracting crowds with its diverse offerings, including theatre performances, dances, and concerts. The serene gardens surrounding the Pavilion are beautifully adorned with vibrant flower beds and meticulously manicured lawns, providing a picturesque backdrop for the venue. The nearby sea adds to the idyllic setting, with its gentle lapping waves and calming presence. Despite its popularity, the Pavilion's history was not without its challenges. In 1948, a devastating fire destroyed the building, leaving only ruins in its wake. However, the spirit of the community was not dampened, and the Pavilion was rebuilt, continuing to serve as a beloved entertainment venue for generations to come.
