EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the determined and resolute visage of Wing Commander Guy Penrose Gibson, VC, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar, as he prepared for one of the most daring and historic missions in World War II. Born on August 12, 1918, Gibson became the first Commanding Officer of the Royal Air Force's No. 617 Squadron, leading them in the legendary "Dam Busters" raid (Operation Chastise) on May 16, 1943. The mission involved the use of bouncing bombs, specially designed to bounce over the dam walls and explode upon impact, with the aim of destroying the Mohne and Eder dams in the Ruhr area. Gibson's heroic leadership resulted in the successful breaching of both dams, causing significant damage to the German war effort. Gibson's achievements earned him the Victoria Cross, making him the most highly decorated serviceman in the country at the age of just 26. Tragically, he lost his life later in the war on September 19, 1944, during a mission over the Netherlands. This poignant photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of Gibson and his fellow airmen, who played a pivotal role in turning the tide of the war in Europe."
