EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, dated 1843, showcases the stunning varieties of water newts and efts (efts being the terrestrial phase of the newt's life cycle) that were known during the Victorian era. The Common Water Newt (Triton cristatus) can be seen in the top left corner, easily identified by its bright orange-red belly and black or dark brown back. The Common Smooth Newt (Lissotriton punctatus), located in the top right, displays its distinctive yellow stripes on its back and a bright orange belly. Moving on to the bottom row, the Straight-lipped Water Newt (Triton bibronii) is depicted on the left. This species is characterized by its straight, rather than upturned, snout and a mottled brown and black back. Lastly, the Palmated Smooth Newt (Lissotriton palmipes), located on the right, is identified by its unique palmated glands on the underside of its hind legs, which are used for defense and camouflage. This photograph is a testament to the rich biodiversity of amphibians that existed during the 1840s. The intricate details of their appearances are beautifully captured, allowing us to appreciate their unique characteristics and the importance of preserving these fascinating creatures for future generations. The image provides a glimpse into the natural world of the past, offering us a deeper understanding of the natural history of these intriguing amphibians.
