EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking cover image from The Sketch magazine, dated 1936, features a captivating portrait of Lady Sheila Milbanke, née Chisholm. Known for her distinctive Tudor-style peaked hat, Lady Milbanke's likeness evokes the elegance and allure of Marie Stuart. At the time of this photograph, Lady Milbanke was the former wife of Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, Lord Loughborough. Their marriage was marred by Loughborough's drinking and gambling habits, resulting in their divorce in 1926. Prior to her divorce, Lady Milbanke was linked romantically with Albert, Duke of York, who would later become King George VI. She later married Sir John Millbanke, eleventh baronet, in 1928, and then Prince Dimitri Romanoff of Russia in 1954. The photograph was taken by the renowned British portrait photographer Madame Yevonde, whose work was celebrated for its innovative use of lighting and dramatic effects. This image of Lady Milbanke, with her enigmatic expression and fashionable hat, remains a testament to the allure and intrigue of the British aristocracy during the early 20th century.
