The former, also known as the Underwing Moth or Clifden Nonpareil, is depicted in the top left and right corners of the print, with its wings folded together, revealing the striking blue underwing pattern. The Apopestes spectrum, or Blue Spectrum Underwing Moth, is illustrated in the bottom left and right corners, with its wings spread open, displaying a vibrant blue and black coloration. Both of these moths belong to the family Erebidae, commonly known as the tiger moths or underwing moths. They undergo complete metamorphosis, transforming from a caterpillar, or larva, to a pupa, and finally to an adult moth.
