EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock after Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur (The Butterflies in Representations according to Nature), showcases two exquisite moth species: Catocala coniuncta and Apopestes spectrum. The former, also known as the Underwing Moth or Clifden Nonpareil, is depicted in the top left and right corners of the print, with its wings folded together, revealing the striking blue underwing pattern. The Apopestes spectrum, or Blue Spectrum Underwing Moth, is illustrated in the bottom left and right corners, with its wings spread open, displaying a vibrant blue and black coloration. Both of these moths belong to the family Erebidae, commonly known as the tiger moths or underwing moths. They undergo complete metamorphosis, transforming from a caterpillar, or larva, to a pupa, and finally to an adult moth. The larvae of Catocala species are known to feed on various host plants, including Fraxinus (ash) trees, while Apopestes species have been observed feeding on a range of deciduous trees. This intricately detailed engraving, produced in Erlangen, Germany, in 1786, is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the Lepidoptera (butterfly and moth) world. The meticulous hand-coloring adds an extra layer of depth and allure to the already captivating designs. The engraving not only serves as a valuable historical record of these species but also as a work of art, showcasing the skill and dedication of the artist and the natural world's enchanting creatures.
