1791 Curtis Edwards Flowered Hypericum Sydenham Wort

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving showcases the large, vibrant yellow flowers of Hypericum calycinum, commonly known as Large Flowered St. John's Wort. The botanical illustration was created by Sydenham Edwards and published in William Curtis's Botanical Magazine in 1791. The Botanical Magazine, also known as "Curtis's Botanical Magazine," was the world's first illustrated periodical devoted to botany. Established in 1787 by William Curtis, a renowned botanist and horticulturist, the magazine aimed to promote the study and appreciation of plants and their beautiful forms. Sydenham Edwards (1764-1815) was a prominent botanical artist and engraver of the time. He began his career as an apprentice to a bookseller before turning to botanical illustration. Edwards' meticulous attention to detail and exceptional skill in engraving are evident in this stunning representation of Large Flowered St. John's Wort. Hypericum calycinum, native to Europe, is a perennial herb that typically grows in woodlands and hedgerows. The plant's striking yellow flowers bloom from late spring to early summer, attracting various pollinators. St. John's Wort has been used in traditional medicine for centuries due to its anti-inflammatory and antidepressant properties. This historical print not only serves as a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the late 18th century but also highlights the enduring beauty and importance of botanical illustrations in documenting and preserving the natural world.
