1792 1866 Churchman Hymn Initiated Keble
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the revered figure of the Reverend John Keble (1792-1866), a pivotal figure in the history of the Anglican Church and a renowned hymn writer and poet. Keble is best known for his role in initiating the Oxford Movement, a religious and theological response to the perceived decline of the Church of England in the 19th century. Born in Fairford, Gloucestershire, Keble studied at the University of Oxford, where he was influenced by the High Church tradition. In 1833, he delivered a series of sermons at Oxford's University Church of St. Mary the Virgin, which criticized the secularization of the Church and called for a return to its traditional practices and beliefs. These sermons, later published as "The Christian Year," ignited a religious revival and sparked the Oxford Movement. Keble's literary contributions extend beyond his sermons, as he was also a prolific hymn writer and poet. Some of his most famous hymns include "New Year," "Sun of My Soul," and "Faith of Our Fathers," which continue to be sung in churches around the world. His poetry, characterized by its deep spirituality and rich language, has been celebrated for its ability to evoke a sense of reverence and awe. Despite his significant impact on Anglican theology and worship, Keble remained a humble and devoted servant of the Church. He continued to serve as a priest until his death in 1866 and was posthumously canonized by the Anglican Communion in 1932. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, captures the somber yet contemplative spirit of a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of spiritual truth and the preservation of the Anglican tradition.
