Iran, Teheran -
Iran, Teheran - Nayrouz (The New Year Festival) - an event which was Coptic and originated in Egypt. Ignorant of the Egyptian language for the most part, Arabs confused the Egyptian new years celebrations (called the feast of Ni-Yarouou - the feast the rivers), with the Persian feast of Nowruz. The misnomer remains today, and the celebrations of the Egyptian new year on the first day of the month of Thout are known as the Neyrouz. Date: 1913

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in Teheran, Iran in 1913, we witness the lively celebrations of Nayrouz, a festival that carries an intriguing historical mix of Egyptian and Persian cultural influences. The origins of this event can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where it was known as the feast of Thout, marking the beginning of the new year. However, due to the lack of understanding of the Egyptian language among Arabs, they mistakenly associated this festival with the Persian feast of Nowruz, leading to the current misnomer. The scene in the image showcases a joyful gathering, with several tents pitched in the desert, adorned with colorful fabrics and intricate patterns. An elephant, a symbol of power and strength, adds to the festive atmosphere, as it gracefully walks through the sand, surrounded by curious onlookers. The air is filled with the aroma of traditional Iranian delicacies, and the sound of music and laughter fills the desert air. Despite the Egyptian origins of Nayrouz, this photograph captures the Persian influence that has shaped the festival into a unique cultural experience. The blending of these diverse influences is a testament to the rich and complex history of Iran, where various civilizations have left their indelible mark. The photograph serves as a reminder of the enduring power of tradition and the beauty of cultural exchange.
