EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor painting depicts the Coast Caper, Capparis lucida, a fascinating flowering plant that was discovered during Captain James Cook's first voyage across the Pacific Ocean between 1768 and 1771. The plant is illustrated in this finished watercolor by the skilled hand of Fred Polydore Nodder, based on an original outline drawing made by Sydney Parkinson. The Coast Caper is a member of the Capparaceae family, which is part of the larger group of angiosperms, flowering plants that produce seeds enclosed in an ovary. This particular species is classified as a eudicot, a type of dicotyledon, meaning it has two seed leaves and two cotyledons. The Coast Caper is also an angiospermae, a flowering plant that produces flowers enclosed in an ovary, and a magnoliophyta, a type of flowering plant that has flowers with sepals, petals, stamens, and a pistil. The Coast Caper is native to the coasts of the Indian and Pacific Oceans and is characterized by its long, slender leaves and clusters of small, yellow or white flowers. The plant is a valuable source of food for many animals, including birds and insects, and has been used in traditional medicine for various ailments. This beautiful illustration provides a glimpse into the rich botanical discoveries made during Captain Cook's historic voyage. Sydney Parkinson, who made the original outline drawing, was a talented artist and naturalist who accompanied Cook on his journey and made numerous observations and drawings of the plants, animals, and peoples they encountered. Fred Polydore Nodder, who completed the watercolor, was a renowned botanical illustrator of the 18th century, known for his precise and detailed work. Together, their collaborative efforts have left us with a stunning record of the natural world as it was discovered over 250 years ago.
