A spread from The Sketch magazine featuring 76 portraits of Cambridge Blues who had joined up during the First World War. EDITORS COMMENTS
This spread from The Sketch magazine, published in 1915, showcases 76 portraits of Cambridge University sportsmen who had answered the call to serve their country during World War 1. The caption reads, "It was a foregone conclusion when war broke out that both Oxford and Cambridge men would enlist in shoals so soon as the call to serve their country reached them." The response from the Blues of both universities was indeed remarkable. These men, in the prime of their athletic careers, represented an important factor in the war. The entire previous year's cricket eleven, eight of the football eleven, thirteen of the rugby fifteen, seven swimmers, seven boxing Blues, seven golf Blues, six of last year's Varsity crew, ten hockey Blues, four lawn-tennis players, the billiard Blue, three polo Blues, twenty-one athletic Blues, three fencing Blues, one tennis Blue, five lacrosse Blues, four gymnastic Blues, both the racquets Blues, and two chess Blues had all enlisted. The whole of the Cambridge University community would have been proud of their athletic heroes' courage and patriotism. However, one cannot help but wonder how many of these young men survived the war. This poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these athletes during a time of war serves as a testament to their bravery and dedication, both on and off the field. The Sketch magazine's spread is a significant historical document, providing a glimpse into the lives of these young men and their commitment to their university, their sport, and their country during a time of great upheaval. This photograph is an important reminder of the impact of the war on the lives of individuals and the communities they belonged to.
