EDITORS COMMENTS
Antipope Benedict XIII, also known as Pedro Martínez de Luna y Pérez de Gotor (1328-1423), is depicted in this stunning colored engraving from the late medieval period. Born in an aristocratic family from Aragón, Spain, Benedict XIII became a controversial figure in religious history as he was officially recognized as an antipope by the Catholic Church. During the 14th and early 15th centuries, the papacy was based in Avignon, France, due to political pressures. Benedict XIII, who was a supporter of the Avignon papacy, was elected as its pope in 1394, but his election was not recognized by the Roman obedience, which was led by Pope Boniface IX. As a result, Benedict XIII is considered an antipope in the history of the Catholic Church. This engraving captures Benedict XIII in a solemn and regal pose, seated on his papal throne, dressed in the traditional papal attire, and adorned with the symbols of his office. The intricate details of the engraving, from the folds of his robes to the intricate patterns on his throne, demonstrate the skill and artistry of the engraver. Despite the controversy surrounding his election, Benedict XIII ruled as pope for nearly 30 years, during which he faced numerous challenges, including the Great Schism of the Western Church and the Hussite Wars in Bohemia. His reign was marked by efforts to reform the Church and promote peace, but ultimately, he was unable to unite the divided Christian world. This image of Antipope Benedict XIII offers a glimpse into the complex political and religious landscape of the late Middle Ages, and serves as a reminder of the enduring power and influence of the papacy, even during periods of division and conflict.
