EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning diorite statue group, dating back to the New Empire period of the 18th Dynasty in ancient Egypt (approximately 1490-1400 BC), depicts the Egyptian priest Ahmose and his mother, Baket-re. The sculpture is currently housed in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark. Ahmose, a noble figure with a vigorous build, is shown seated on a low chair, his bare feet resting on a footstool. He wears the traditional white linen garment and a wig adorned with the nemes headdress and uraeus serpent. His youthful features and calm expression exude a sense of wisdom and authority. Beside him, his mother Baket-re is depicted in a similar pose, but barefooted and with her legs crossed. She is dressed in a long, flowing dress and a wig with a distinctive tall headdress. Her age is suggested by the wrinkles on her face and the hieroglyphic scripture on her seat, which reads "Mother of the God" and "Beloved of Amun." The intimate scene of a mother and son, both seated and barefooted, is a rare representation in ancient Egyptian art. The use of diorite, a dark and heavy stone, adds to the sculpture's striking visual impact and underscores the importance of the subjects. The intricate hieroglyphic scripture further emphasizes their noble status and connection to the Egyptian civilization.
