Willem Barents ship among the Arctic ice, 1594-1597
Willem Barents ship among the Arctic ice, 1594-1597. Barents (d 1597) was a Dutch navigator who led expeditions in 1594, 1595 and 1596-1597 in search of a Northeast Passage to Asia. None of the expeditions succeeded in finding an open route to the Far East, and on the third voyage Barents ship became trapped in the ice, forcing the crew to remain in the Arctic over the winter. The ship was not released by the ice as soon as expected in the spring, and the crew made their escape in open boats, setting off on 13 June 1597. Most returned home safely, but Barents himself died on 30 June. Illustration after Gerard de Veers account of Barents three voyages, published in 1598

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Willem Barents' ship amidst the vast expanse of Arctic ice during his expeditions from 1594 to 1597. Barents, a courageous Dutch navigator, led these voyages in search of a Northeast Passage to Asia. Unfortunately, none of his attempts were successful in finding an open route to the Far East. During his third voyage, tragedy struck when Barents' ship became trapped in the unforgiving grip of the ice. The crew was forced to endure a harsh Arctic winter while waiting for their vessel's release. However, spring arrived without mercy as the ice refused to loosen its hold on the ship as expected. Desperate for survival, Barents and his crew made a daring escape in open boats on June 13th, 1597. Although most managed to return home safely, this valiant explorer himself tragically perished on June 30th. The illustration is based on Gerard de Veer's account of Barents' three voyages published in 1598. It vividly captures the treacherous conditions faced by these brave sailors as they navigated through icy waters and battled against nature's fury. This image serves as a poignant reminder of both human resilience and the formidable power of nature. It symbolizes Barents' unwavering determination and unwavering spirit that drove him towards uncharted territories despite facing insurmountable challenges along the way.
