The Vatican Hatter, 1874. Artist: Joseph Swain
The Vatican Hatter, 1874 - who looks very like Pope Pius IX - shows the new Archbishop of Westminster a cardinals hat and apologises that he hasn t got one to fit Dr Manning. Henry Edward Manning had in fact been one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement, but converted to Roman Catholicism in 1851. He did become a Cardinal in 1875. EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the intricate relationship between religion and politics in the 19th century. Created by Joseph Swain, this satirical cartoon features Pope Pius IX and the new Archbishop of Westminster, Henry Edward Manning. The image depicts an amusing encounter at a hat shop where The Vatican Hatter presents Dr. Manning with a cardinal's hat that unfortunately does not fit him. Dr. Manning's presence in the cartoon holds significant historical context as he was one of the prominent leaders of the Oxford Movement, which aimed to revive Catholic traditions within Anglicanism. However, his conversion to Roman Catholicism in 1851 caused quite a stir among religious circles. The print humorously highlights both Dr. Manning's journey from being an influential figure within Anglicanism to becoming a Cardinal in 1875 under Pope Pius IX's guidance. It also sheds light on the complexities surrounding religious conversions during this period. Through its monochrome depiction and detailed engraving style, "The Vatican Hatter" captures the essence of British society's fascination with religion and its impact on political dynamics during the 19th century. This heritage image serves as a reminder of how art can provide insightful commentary on societal shifts while offering viewers an opportunity for reflection on history and culture.
