Thomas Paine, English-born American revolutionary, writer and philosopher, c1790
Thomas Paine, English-born American revolutionary, writer and philosopher, c1790. Paine (1737-1809) emigrated to America in 1774, and two years later published an influential 50-page pamphlet titled Common Sense which advocated American independence. After the American Revolution Paine returned to England, where he became a supporter of the French Revolution, which he defended in his The Rights of Man, published in 1791-1792. The book was banned in England and Paine was forced into exile in France. He was elected to the National Convention, but was imprisoned in by Robespierre in 1793 when he criticised his policy of the Reign of Terror. Paine returned to the United States again in 1802, but the unpopularity of the views on religion expressed in his The Age of Reason, written in 1794-1796, led to him being widely ostracised by American society. From Original Portraits by John Kay. (Edinburgh, c1790)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Thomas Paine, an English-born American revolutionary, writer, and philosopher. Taken around 1790 by renowned portrait artist John Kay, this image showcases Paine's intellectual prowess and unwavering dedication to his beliefs. Paine's journey began when he emigrated to America in 1774, seeking a new life filled with freedom and opportunity. It was here that he published his influential pamphlet titled "Common Sense" in 1776, advocating for American independence from British rule. This groundbreaking work played a crucial role in shaping public opinion during the American Revolution. After the war, Paine returned to England but soon found himself drawn into another revolution - the French Revolution of 1789. His passionate defense of this movement can be seen in his famous book "The Rights of Man" which challenged existing political systems and championed equality for all. However, these radical ideas led to Paine's exile in France after being banned in England. Despite being elected to the National Convention there, he faced imprisonment due to his criticism of Robespierre's Reign of Terror. Paine eventually returned to the United States but faced widespread ostracism due to his controversial views on religion expressed in "The Age of Reason". Nevertheless, his contributions as a political philosopher continue to resonate today. In this remarkable portrait by John Kay, we witness Thomas Paine as a man driven by reason and guided by principles that shaped nations. His legacy remains an inspiration for those who strive for liberty and justice throughout history.
