EDITORS COMMENTS
Signatures of Henry VII, Elizabeth of York, Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, 16th century. Artist: King Henry VIII This print showcases the remarkable signatures of four influential figures from Tudor history - Henry VII, Elizabeth of York, Henry VIII, and Catherine of Aragon. Preserved within a Book of Hours dedicated to the Virgin Mary and other religious offices, this manuscript is a testament to the artistic talent and meticulous craftsmanship of Flemish artists. Believed to have once belonged to a noblewoman in the court of the first two Tudor kings, this precious document bears autograph inscriptions by both monarchs and their respective spouses. The signature of Queen Catherine has unfortunately been partially erased over time. Transporting us back to the vibrant world of medieval England, this print offers a glimpse into an era defined by its rich literature and royal lineage. Each stroke reveals not only their regal status but also hints at their individual personalities through their distinct handwriting styles. As we admire these royal signatures meticulously transcribed on velvety vellum pages illuminated with vivid colors, we are reminded that even centuries later they continue to captivate our imagination. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder that history lives on through tangible artifacts like these - connecting us directly with those who shaped our past.
