Saint Philip Howard, 20th Earl of Arundel, English nobleman, (1826). Artist: T Wright
Saint Philip Howard, 20th Earl of Arundel, English nobleman, 1826. Howard (1557-1595) became Catholic during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He spent ten years in the Tower of London, although charges of high treason were never proved. He asked the Queen, as he lay dying of dysentery, to allow him to see his wife, and his baby son who had never seen. The Queen told him that if he would return to Protestantism his request would be granted. Howard refused. He was acclaimed as a Catholic Martyr and was canonised by Pope Paul VI in 1970

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Saint Philip Howard, the 20th Earl of Arundel, an English nobleman from the 16th century. Painted by T Wright in 1826, this portrait captures the essence of a man who stood firmly for his beliefs. Saint Philip Howard's story is one of unwavering faith and sacrifice. During Queen Elizabeth I's reign, he converted to Catholicism and faced severe consequences for his choice. Despite spending ten years imprisoned in the Tower of London on charges that were never proven, he remained steadfast in his convictions. In his final moments battling dysentery, Saint Philip Howard made a heartfelt request to see his wife and baby son whom he had never met. The Queen offered him this opportunity if only he renounced Catholicism; however, he refused without hesitation. His refusal sealed his fate as a martyr for the Catholic faith. Recognized as such by Pope Paul VI in 1970 when canonized, Saint Philip Howard became an inspiration to many believers around the world. This engraving not only portrays a nobleman dressed in traditional Elizabethan attire with intricate lace details but also represents courage and devotion to one's principles. It serves as a reminder that sometimes we must make difficult choices based on our deepest convictions rather than succumbing to external pressures or temptations. Federico Zuccaro skillfully captured both the physical appearance and inner strength of Saint Philip Howard through this remarkable portrait print.
