Prince Woronzow, Russian General of the forces in Asia, 1853. Mikhail Semenovich Vorontsov (1782-1856) became an officer in the army during the Napoleonic wars. In 1823 he was appointed governor general of New Russia, (the southern Ukraine). In 1844 he was appointed commander-in-chief and viceroy of the Caucasus. In recognition of his campaign in Chechnya, he was raised to the dignity of prince. He was made a field-marshal in 1856. An engraving from the Illustrated London News, (11 December 1853)
