Pegasus Unharnessed, 1865. Artist: John Tenniel

Pegasus Unharnessed, 1865. Mr Gladstone, the Pegasus of Free Thought and Free Trade, was, in July 1865, defeated at the Oxford University Elections. In this cartoon, he has slipped his traces, leaving the cart containing bigotry, subscription, tests and duties, embedded in its rut. Gladstone went on to fight for his seat in Lancashire South, from where he could pursue his vision in a way which would have not been permitted of an MP for Oxford University. This was seen by Punch as a good thing for Gladstone and for the country. Earlier in his career, Gladstone had been affiliated with the Conservatives, but his conservative views had always been combined with a deep desire for improvement. So, he had outgrown the Oxford brand of Toryism and was now free finally to move away from the Movements principles. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 29, 1865

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Pegasus Unharnessed, 1865" artist John Tenniel brilliantly captures the essence of political transformation and personal freedom. The central figure in the image is Mr Gladstone, a prominent advocate for free thought and trade during the 19th century. Defeated at the Oxford University Elections in July 1865, Gladstone symbolically breaks free from his constraints as he slips his traces, leaving behind a cart filled with bigotry, subscription, tests, and duties. This powerful cartoon represents Gladstone's departure from the conservative principles associated with Oxford University. Having outgrown their brand of Toryism, he now has the opportunity to pursue his vision for improvement without compromise. Punch magazine views this development as positive not only for Gladstone but also for the country. The image showcases Pegasus, a mythical winged horse representing inspiration and creativity. With its majestic wings spread wide open against a monochrome backdrop, Pegasus embodies freedom and limitless possibilities. As Gladstone takes flight on this magnificent creature's back, he leaves behind an entrenched rut that symbolizes outdated traditions. Through Tenniel's skillful engraving technique and attention to detail, this historic moment comes alive before our eyes. The composition beautifully juxtaposes man and beast while incorporating elements of education such as academic attire represented by mortarboards worn by both figures. Overall, this print serves as a visual testament to William Ewart Gladstone's determination to break free from societal constraints in pursuit of progress and change.
